about

"The Spendthrift and the Swallow" is the first official release of a series of one-on-one collaborations based on Aesop's fables, conducted between Juniperus and the regional Saskatchewan music community.

lyrics

The snow had just gone, defeated by Spring.
A gambling man speaks with a bird as it sings,
“I’ve lost all my money. I’ve only my coat, and everything else, I’ve already sold.”

Oh, spender, spender
the fault is your own; a foolhardy throw,
your possessions are gone, you haven’t a home.

He’d taken his rest by the old cedar tree
when he noticed the swallow his head rose with glee.
Took the bird as a signal that summer was nigh,
put his coat up for sale; he wasted no time.

When he arose the next morning, to his chill and surprise
the frost had come back his choice was unwise.
Then he saw his mistake in the swallow’s demise.

Oh, spender, spender
the Fault is your own; a foolhardy throw,
for the winter’s not gone from the poor swallow’s bones.

Spender, spender...

about

Juniperus Saskatchewan

In 2013, Jeffrey Popiel began a solo project titled 'Juniperus'. His inspired originals have more recently taken on a new life with the pursuit of ÆSOP's Fables. While these new 'fable songs' reside in the realm of folk, they present themselves in a diverse way, by using distinct voicing for each character, and swaying between genres, such as ambient folk, quirky pop, and folky blues. ... more
